Hillary's Boat Harbour and Really busy...

So, the complete lack of posts is because I've been really busy. I wish I could say I’ve been busy doing really fun and exciting things worth writing about but that just isn’t the case. Last week we did take the time to drive up the road to the Hillary’s Boat Harbour. It’s a bit of a touristy spot here and we hadn’t been yet. It was nice (pictured) and we sat down by the water and had a coffee. The seagulls were crazy and it reminded me of Granville island. Last time I was at Granville island I saw a seagull swoop down and take some food off a guys plate while he was walking to find a table – aggressive.

Other than that it has been business as usual with boatloads of school work, assignments, presentations, reading, and research. The usual. October is going to be crazy with lots of projects due and 2 oral exams.

Birthday in Perth

Well today was my 24th birthday. Second birthday I’ve celebrated in Perth. I started the day off by sleeping in which was a welcomed change. Danielle made a super tasty breakfast including pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream (pictured). There was also lots of bacon and fresh squeezed orange juice. After breakfast I relaxed for a bit before going to work. Nothing exciting happened at work. After work I came home to a surprise fettuccine with asparagus and red capsicum. Danielle has a big chemistry exam tomorrow so she exceeded my expectations. We’re going to go out later in the week and do something to celebrate my birthday.

Twenty four sounds so old.

A day in the life of...

I snapped these flicks in one of my labs last week.

This picture is of two blood culture bottles. The blue top bottle is for aerobic bacteria while the silver top bottle is for anaerobic bacteria. Each bottle requires a minimum of 8mL's of blood. They are used to check blood for bacteria in cases like endocarditis. Each bottle is put in an incubator which monitors the contents for bacterial growth.

This is a series of test tubes each with the same amount of bacteria and various serial dilutions of antibiotic. These are used to determine the minimum amount of antibiotic needed to kill all the bacteria. The turbid tubes are ones where there is not enough antibiotic and the bacteria are able to grow. The minimum inhibitory concentration in this case is 0.5mg/L

And now you know.
